Shanghai Travel Guide: The Hotels I Used While Exploring the City
This is my small Shanghai travel guide, built from my own stays rather than a roundup of places I haven't slept. Shanghai is big enough that where you stay shapes the city you see, so deciding where to stay in Shanghai is worth a little thought. Across my time there I've stayed at four quite different hotels, and these notes gather them in one place. They weren't all on the same trip.
Where I Stayed in Shanghai
Caption by Hyatt Zhongshan Park, Mercure Hongqiao Airport, JI Hotel and InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland. These are records of where I stayed, not scored reviews — I'm not rating rooms or listing amenities.
What I Did: the Bund and Qibao Ancient Town
I explored the Bund, Shanghai's famous riverside waterfront, and Qibao Ancient Town, a historic water town within the city. They show two very different sides of Shanghai.
Music was part of my time there too: I joined local jam sessions in the city.
Choosing Where to Stay in Shanghai (general advice)
This is general guidance, separate from my stays. A central base suits sightseeing, while an airport-area hotel can make sense around early flights or onward connections. Check metro access, confirm which airport you're using — Shanghai has more than one — and verify current rates, policies and registration requirements for international guests directly with the hotel.
